Subject:
Temporary Student Restrictions Related to COVID-19 Community Response

Situation:
COVID-19 education/preparation is underway, all efforts are focused on caring for our patients, families, community, and members. The emphasis on the health and safety of our employees, staff, nurses, and physicians remains a top priority to all of us. Following consultation with KP clinical experts and a review of current best practices, we are taking proactive steps to temporarily discontinue clinical training programs/hours for pre-licensure students.

Background:
This decision is important to preserve vital supplies and reduce non-essential exposure risks.

Assessment:
Kaiser Permanente Northern California Regional Command Center will continue to monitor and reassess the public health risks and notify NCAL leaders, key academic partners and affiliates when a decision is made to reinstate Clinical and/or Observational Programs.

Student Definition and Scope:

Pre-licensure students participating in clinical training programs and/or shadowing experiences in a Kaiser Foundation Hospital and The Permanente Medical Group, Inc.

*Restrictions do not apply to students participating in work-study, intern/externships or students in graduate or certificate programs that are currently licensed in their specialty area.

Recommendations for all students and instructors coming to our facilities:

  1. Suspend clinical rotations for pre-licensure students until further notice
  2. Ensure adherence to the following:
    • Avoid caring for Rule Out (R/O), Persons Under Investigation (PUIs) or confirmed COVID- 19 patients.
    • Limit patient observation within the Emergency Department and other high-risk areas.
    • Practice good hand-hygiene.
