Resumption of Clinical Training for prelicensure Students

April 7, 2021 (updated 4/7; (9:08 a.m.)

Earlier this spring, as part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kaiser Permanente Northern California region temporarily discontinued clinical training hours for prelicensure students. Several factors influenced this decision, and while it was necessary, we recognize that this significantly impacted student training schedules and plans. We remain committed to nursing education and understand that clinical practice site experiences are integral to student training.

We are writing to let you know that effective immediately, Kaiser Permanente Northern California is resuming clinical training for prelicensure students. This includes students enrolled in clinical training programs and/or certificate programs for nursing and other disciplines that support patient care activities in hospitals and clinics.

Academic partners should work through customary channels in each medical center to ensure that there is coordination of clinical placements, scheduling, and onboarding appropriate to the setting. We ask that schools, faculty, and students abide by all defined onboarding, orientation, and educational requirements requested by the medical center.

Finally, we understand that there is a pent-up need for clinical training hours, and we want to accommodate these needs. Given the dynamic nature of this pandemic however, we cannot promise that the Region will have the capacity to approve all placements upon request.

We are grateful to you for your patience, flexibility, and the creativity you’ve demonstrated in response to this public health crisis. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions or concerns.
